Change is a’ coming to WordPress.

If you haven’t heard, WordPress is getting a new editor called “Gutenberg”. It will be in the WordPress 5, whenever they roll it out.

Many of us dislike change. Especially when it’s not asked for, but thrust upon us without much input. Windows 10  was that way, and I fought it, and won. At least in my mind I won.

This change, while very different, is fresh, and needed. WordPress has had the same editor for ages. While I don’t need a full suite of fancy tools to make a post, I do hate when you try to do something nice, and you have to spend your time untangling the mess made by the current editor. Such as the “center” option wanting to center everything close to the area you’re working in, and you have to find out where it went wrong. Wrestling with photo plugins so you can do an album display.

I have tried the new Editor. I hate change, but I actually found myself liking this. It is almost as if you’re using a WYSIWYG web page editor. Drag and drop, one click options, photo gallery using just drag and drop. I’m sure many of us will dislike it, many will love it, either way it’s coming down the pipe.

Over the years, blogs have gone from our personal, interactive sharing sites, to commercialization, with huge splashy pictures that take up the entire monitor screen, greeting you. Business, and websites are shifting to Blogs, even forums. For good or bad, change is a’ coming. Only problem? No one seems to know when.

This is but one link, of many that you can check out for more information.

  1. I am one of those old-fashioned people who (unlike you) is not good with new technology, Ron.
It has taken me over five years to get to my existing (basic) skill level with WordPress, so news of any big change leaves me with just two words to say.
    “Oh, no!” 🙂
    Best wishes, Pete.

    1. It’s mostly things grouped, or listed, in different areas. There should be a YouTube somewhere, that will give everyone a feel for it, watching it work.

  2. My posts and layouts are pretty simple and I like it that way. I’m a firm believer in clean, easy to read and follow design. So, I hope the changes will allow me to continue to have a similar workflow and results. I appreciate the link you provided, but I have to admit that I didn’t understand most of it… lots of assumed knowledge in the “explanation.”

    1. Nerds tend to do that, I tried to watch a video talk on it, and nearly fell asleep. It was, dry as a bone. I’m no video pro, but I may make one just showing some things in it, and post it here. I have a test blog and have installed a plugin, that lets you try the major features. Thanks for the comment Janis, always a pleasure to see you.

  3. A new editor would be good. Occasionally I fight with the current one. I don’t like change when it isn’t an improvement but we’ll see. I have and love Windows 10!

    1. Kate, if you can handle Windows 10, you can handle this. When it came to Windows 10, I drew a blank. I got stubborn and refused to change, I went to Linux. I’m really having fun too. I’m glad you love 10, That makes learning everything about it, more enjoyable!

  4. I hate change too (is it a function of our greatly advance age?! 😉 )… BUT as you describe it, I think I’ll like it. Love drag ‘n’ drop. As a Mac-o-phile from the very beginning of its birth, I love WYSIWYG. Bring it on, I say!

  5. Thanks for the update, Ron. I like WYSIWYG! I had XP until it didn’t work anymore. Windows 7 briefly. I’ve had Windows 10 from the start and really like it. And for whatever reason, everything works better in Firefox.

    1. Yes, they are still beta testing. I think they thought it would be ready before now. I have a test site. They caution about using it on an active site, in case they missed a bad bug, at this point.
